Dominant cultures incentives to live by its script are enticing and deceptive. Recognizing the strategic allure and cultural pressure is necessary. However, the incentives only exist for some people, which is why other communities continue to practice interdependence for centuries. It’s how we survive.
I do think part of why the world turned upside down here and everything was so COUNTER-dominant culture... was because the incentives were so completely upended by the violence and shock-and-awe of the occupation, a trauma which deeply affected everyone here. So in some ways, it was "easier" for people to leave the scripts behind.
